The United Arab Emirates Ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al Otaiba advances several cross-cultural initiatives designed to improve understanding between the two countries on a fundamental level. From popular entertainment to literature, Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba and his colleagues promote the exchange of art and ideas between different cultures and languages. To this end, the Abu Dhabi nonprofit Kalima, in conjunction with the Embassy of the UAE in Washington, D.C., is sponsoring an ongoing translation, publication, and distribution initiative to bring classic American books to readers of the Arabic language in the UAE and elsewhere in the world. Kalima, which means “word” in Arabic, was founded to meet Arabic readers’ growing interest in classic and modern literature from other languages and cultures—books that are not often readily available. Since then, Kalima has selected, translated, and published several titles, ranging from great works of literature to best-selling business volumes. Additionally, Kalima recently sponsored the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.
