Masdar, which means “source” in Arabic, is designed to identify and bring to market a wide variety of clean technology and renewable energy sources and to assist Abu Dhabi in diversifying its economy. Masdar City, with a groundbreaking in 2008, was planned as the first-ever completely automobile-free, waste-free, zero-carbon-emission metropolitan area in the world. The city, which will house a desalination plant powered with solar energy and an irrigation system using treated wastewater, has received a World Clean Energy Award. Planners believe that Masdar’s investment in research and design will contribute to sustainable development for the entire global community.
