Two diplomats who work with Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba graduated from the University of Alabama, and felt especially compelled to help the Tuscaloosa community after a tornado tore through the city. The embassy organized a collaboration between Habitat for Humanity and the Emirates Foundation in the UAE that provided for 12 UAE citizens to travel to Tuscaloosa and aid in reconstruction.
During their visit, the UAE citizens met with community leaders, including Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox, who appreciated their dedication toward the city’s rebuilding efforts. The UAE often provides emergency relief to regions struck by natural disasters. Volunteers have recently served in China, Italy, Tanzania, Thailand, Egypt, and Morocco. Earlier this year, UAE volunteers traveled to Joplin, Missouri, to aid in the construction of 10 homes in 16 days.
