This spring, the UAE and the United States have begun the first of many discussions on strengthening civil and national security space collaboration. Dr. Al Ahbabi said, “Through space research and collaboration, we have the opportunity to further strengthen relations between our close nations, to cooperate and exchange ideas on developing the international space industry.”
Leaders from the UAE and USA agreed on a strategy that focuses on building mutual understanding of the space systems on which both countries rely on for economic, environmental, security and social well-being. These discussions also focused on areas of growth including plans for further space exploration and bilateral space science cooperation. Specifically, each country will focus on learning from satellite based data that will help understand more about climate change, space situational awareness, navigation and timing.
Additionally, these discussions will explore the future implications of space travel such as opportunities for fair and open global trade and commerce for commercial space systems The UAE has already invested Dh20bn in space technology and currently has seven operating satellites. Dr. Al Ahbabi envisions the partnership with the US to create more opportunity for both nations and the UAE’s aerospace industry to be a key driver in the UAE economy.
In addition to announcing the plans for the partnership, the UAE also announced their exciting plan for a mission to Mars. The country hopes to send land a probe on the surface of Mars by 2021, just in time for to celebrate the UAE’s 50th anniversary. The space collaboration between the UAE and US will certainly aid in achieving this goal.
The development of solid space foundations and technology has proven its positive impact on improving the quality of life worldwide and on global economic growth. It is the hope that the partnership of the United States and the UAE will yield great advances in the space industry and further scientific understanding of our universe for all of mankind.
