The Embassy’s partnership with Manchester City has allowed the UAE to positively impact the lives of thousands of children, with the East Los Angeles soccer field providing exercise and fun for more than 2,500 kids in the Boys & Girls Club. The plan to provide a soccer pitch came out of the City Soccer in the Community program, Manchester City’s U.S.-based community organization that provides soccer coaching for kids. Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba has supported the program in part to promote sports, which he believes have the power to unite individuals and create lasting improvements in communities.
With a crowd that included Yousef Al Otaiba, the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Ambassador to the United States, as well as hundreds of children from the local community, the Boys & Girls Club of East Los Angeles celebrated the opening of a new soccer field on the grounds of the club’s McDonnell Avenue facilities in the fall of 2011. A gift from the UAE to the Boys & Girls Club, the soccer field is the result of a partnership between the UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Manchester City Football Club, an English Premier League soccer team owned by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
